In the fall of 2001 following a trip to New York for the 911 remembrance, seven members of the Vista Firefighters Association decided to learn to play bagpipes. Those original members were: Jon Blumeyer, Chris Bowden, Jim Chumbley, William K. Conover, Sam Craig, Jeff Hahn, and Jim Wold.
The North San Diego County Firefighters Pipes and Drums was established first and foremost to honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in our profession and to those brothers and sisters in law enforcement and the other uniformed services. We also strive to serve our profession by bringing the pipes and drums to events such as Fire, Paramedic and Police Academy graduations and service related charity events.
The current membership of the North San Diego County Firefighters Pipes and Drums is:
Jeff Hahn, Vista Fire, Pipe Major
Mark Vierow, Vista Fire, Drum Sergeant
Jon Blumeyer, Vista Fire
Chris Bowden, Vista Fire
Jim Chumbley, Vista Fire
Bill Hoffman, Oceanside Fire
Bryan Howell, Oceanside Fire
Curt Jack, Camp Pendleton Fire
Ken Love, Oceanside Fire (Ret.)
Dave McQuead, Rancho Santa Fe Fire
Chris Mertz, Rancho Santa Fe Fire
Dennis Rodgers, Oceanside Fire
Kelcey Sass, Vista Fire
Don Shellhammer, Vista Fire
Jim Wold, Vista Fire (Ret.)
Membership in the North San Diego County Firefighters Pipes and Drums is open to any active or retired firefighters in the area. No experience is necessary to start and initial piping lessons are free. Initial equipment costs are minimal until the student feels he/she is ready to jump in with both feet.
